Exactly one year ago today we gave our welcome home to our precious little baby. Andrea was to be the most beautiful Christmas present, however, the fate had decided for an early arrival of ten weeks. Fortunately he was a healthy baby and his premature birth was not due to serious problems. But he still had to grow much and, for the first five weeks of life, his home was the department of Pathology and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of S. Matteo Hospital of Pavia. This post will be a thanksgiving for all doctors, nurses and auxiliary. On the door of the ward is a sign that said "we take care of the children, not patients"and it is absolutely true. Because, in addition to professionalism, it takes too much love to help small defenseless creatures to grow when should still be safe in their mothers and to give hope to many parents frightened by what the future might give to their children. Special thanks to Dr. Figar that took care of Andrea during his hospitalization and, with her kindness, gentleness and availability, helped us a lot in the months ahead, even when to be parents of a child smaller than other children frightened us so much. Now a year has passed and soon we will end our regular visits in that department. Andrea is grown and when I watch him my thoughts often run to that reality that made me understand how the power of life can do miracles, as a profession can help, hour after hour, to grow and become stronger, as the fragility should be a source of hope and prayer and, above all, that the greatest gift of all is to be able to lull, protect, grow and love a child.
